How to Wash a Comforter So it Looks Like New

Comforters are warm due to filled multiple layers of warm material such as microfibers, cotton, or wool.

But many of the comforters after buying and 3-4 use it are not as warm as when we buy them. They lose their warmth due to the harm of the warm material by following wrong washing methods.

But the good news is in this guide we'll share how to wash your comforter so it looks like new to keep your comforter warm, soft, and fluffy.

How to Wash a Comforter

Step 1

Read the Care Tag

Before washing, read the care tag and follow the directions for washing and drying the comforter.

Step 2

Pre-Inspection & Treatment

Shake the comforter to eliminate loose dust. Check it for damage, repair small holes, and spot-treat stains with a small amount of enzyme-based detergent, working it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft-bristled nylon brush. Allow the detergent to work for at least 15 minutes before putting the comforter in the washing machine.

Step 3

Loading the washer

To wash a Comforter, it's best to use a front- or top-loading machine to avoid squeezing the stuffing. Lay the Comforter evenly to allow for movement.

Step 4

Washer Settings and Detergent

Select a gentle/heavy bedding cycle and use a normal or small amount of detergent. Also, set the temperature to cold or warm water.

Step 5

Washing and Rinsing

Wash the comforter in a washing machine along with similarly colored items to help balance the load and protect your comforter. When removing it from the washer, give the comforter a good shake to reduce wrinkles and help it dry evenly. If you prefer, you can also wash the comforter by hand in a bathtub using water mixed with a small amount of mild detergent. Let it soak for about 10 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with clean water.

Step 6

Drying

Transfer the comforter to an extra-large dryer. Add two to three clean tennis balls or dryer balls to maintain fluff and prevent clumping. Use a low-heat or air-dry setting, high heat can shrink or damage the filling. Every 20–30 minutes, pause to fluff and rearrange for even drying. Ensure it is completely dry before use or storage, as trapped moisture can lead to mildew.

#Tip - For Comforters labeled “dry clean only,” choose professional dry cleaning service or spot clean as instructed.

Tips to Keep Your Comforter Clean

  • Use a duvet cover to protect the comforter from stains and damage.

  • Shake your Comforter to eliminate dust and odours.

  • Use a lint brush to remove pet hair and fabric shaver for eliminating pilling.

Conclusion

Keeping the comforter warm is easily achievable. By following the correct washing methods such as before washing, shaking the comforter to eliminate dust, and using clean tennis or dryer balls to maintain softness.
