Woollen blankets have always held a special place in Indian homes. They’re a symbol of comfort, warmth, and nostalgia. Whether it’s that soft family blanket passed down through generations or a new one you’ve just bought, wool blankets have a charm that never fades.
But keeping them looking and feeling as good as new takes a bit of care. Wool is a delicate natural fibre, and washing it incorrectly can cause it to lose its softness or shape.
In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to wash, dry, and store your wool blankets so they stay clean, cosy, and last for many winters to come.
Check your wool blanket for any noticeable spills or stains. Gently blot them with cold water and a mild wool detergent using a clean cloth. Do not scrub, as this can cause felting or pilling. Treating blanket stains properly helps prevent permanent marks.
Dry wool blankets flat on a clean surface in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat. Use a towel to press out excess water gently before laying the blanket flat. Don't hang the blanket to prevent stretching or distortion.
Follow this way only if handwashing is preferred in the care label. Fill a large basin or tub with cold or lukewarm water and a dedicated wool detergent. Gently press and swirl the wool blanket through the water; avoid twisting or squeezing it harshly.
Soak for 15–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cold water. Eliminate water by rolling in a towel and pressing gently.
If it’s mentioned on the care label, prefer a machine wash. Select a wool/delicate cycle with cold water, and add a mild wool detergent. Place the blanket in a mesh laundry bag if possible, and use a low spin speed. Remove promptly after cycling and skip the dryer.
Check the care label and “dry clean only” wool blankets, choose a professional dry cleaner only.
Shake your wool blankets to remove dust, lint, and loose debris. Doing this before airing or washing helps keep the blankets soft, fluffy, and clean.
Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dust, crumbs, or lint from the blanket’s surface. Brush gently in the direction of the wool fibres.
Store wool blankets in a tightly sealed bin or a heavy plastic bag. Use natural repellents like cedar chips or lavender to keep moths away. Ensure blankets are clean and completely dry before storing.
Remove any pills or bobbles using a wool-safe comb, fabric shaver, and safety razor. Gently use in one direction.
Iron wool blankets only when you notice a couple of wrinkles. Always place a damp cloth between the iron and blanket to avoid damaging small patches. Check care labels, as some blankets should not be ironed.
This winter season, follow these effective methods to wash and care for your wool blankets. Spot clean stains promptly and store your blankets properly in heavy plastic bags to protect against moths. Regular care ensures your wool blankets stay clean, soft, fluffy, and long-lasting. Practice these simple yet essential steps to enjoy warmth and comfort throughout the cold months.
